Seton Smith

Seton Smith was born in Newark, New Jersey, and has studied at Bennington College, Boston University, the Massachusetts College of Art, the Museum of Folk Art, Cooper Union, and the New School. She is the daughter of noted 1960s sculptor Tony Smith and her sister Kiki is also an artist. Smith began her career as a painter and shifted to photography in the 1980s while living in France. She is best known for her still lifes in which the interior of a room seems to convey light from within. More recently, Smith has been photographing exteriors of buildings as well as woodlands. Regardless of subject, she generally uses a handheld Hasselblad and shoots slightly out of focus. She then makes prints that are roughly the size of the viewer and hangs them close to the floor for maximum impact. In addition to making photographs, Smith also creates installations.
Her works are held in collections including the Centre George Pompidou; the Maison Europeene de la Photographie: and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
